Part One: The Birth and the Trip
(1905-1912)

Khai always loved telling the story of my birth and I never quite knew why. Maybe it was because of my being a mulatto, or because of how foreign my father was. Or maybe he just loved to spin tales, to make great things out of every-day beauties.

He always started it as if he was weaving together many stories from years past: "It was a col' nigh', I tell ya. The winds were a-whippin' 'round us as we stood huddlin' 'round dose two, wit' dat pretty lil' Arashi holdin' dat baby, and dat funny ligh'-skinned man just a-grinnin' from ear tuh ear, he was so happy. Boy, dat baby was the prettiest damn t'ing I eva' saw, bein' dat pretty shade'a brown and dose ligh' eyes. Wit dat pretty baby wit dose pretty eyes and dat pretty skin just a-cryin' her lil' head off. It was damned byoo'tful."

In some ways, I guess it would be. Beautiful, I mean. My father - Alfons Segur - was from Germanic heritage, and he was light skinned. My mother - Arashi - was Egyptian, and thus had dark skin. I was their love child, the unwanted but still adored one. From what I remember of my few years there, we were happy in our village of Nahiya. I grew through my toddler years being the communal favourite, learning to walk and talk from the tribal villagers who coddled me and loved me as if I were their own. I know what it's like to live happily in thatched houses on the edge of a desert, relying on the wild Nile for survival. I know what it's like to be raised by an odd "family" that consisted of about 30 people I wasn't even related to. I know what it's like to lose my mother to a (now) common and easily curable disease just because we didn't have the medical knowledge to save her. I remember most of these things, despite my young age. I always had good memory.

Once mother died, father soon started to die too, just in a different way. It was obvious he loved her. Hell, he quit his job as an archaeologist just to settle in a village in the middle of no where to raise a devil-child that was always different and wily like a sprite. He loved her, and that's why he began to wither once she passed. The villagers didn't bury her body - it just wasn't a custom for back then - but instead they burnt her in a large funeral pyre. All I remember of that day was the bright, bright fire and the flames licking at my hands and feet as I tried to run after my mother's burning body, only to be held back by Khai.

I don't remember much of the next few weeks, except that I was often found with Khai, old, story-telling Khai, because he knew that seeing my father would only hurt me. Eventually, my father decided to send me away, and he made elaborate plans to send me over to England to live with an old colleague named Archibald. I was to call him Uncle Archie. The trip to England was long and dangerous, I know that much, but I don't remember anything else. Those days blurred back then and ran into each other like streams of consciousness, meshing and twisting until they become one single idea. Yes, the ride was long, but I dreaded getting off that boat, for I knew that once I stepped on English land, I'd never be able to go back.

I was only 7 years old.

Part Two: Arpinge
(1912-1926)

I remember vividly the act of stepping off the boat and nearly losing my balance. One of the seamen grabbed me by the arm - a little too roughly for my tastes -, laughed, and righted me. "Aye, ye haven't gotten yer land legs yet, girlie. Give it a few minutes and yer'll be on yer way." He patted me on the head and walked back onto his ship to do whatever those kind of men do, and I was left to wait on my new family member. I didn't have much with me: a simple bag with a few of my mother's possessions in it, a book from my father, and a small hand-made earring that Khai made me.

It didn't take long before I saw an old man walk up to me, using a cane that he didn't seem to need. He was in his mid-sixties by the look of it, with a full head of grey hair and a moustache, twinkling blue eyes and the air of a healthy old man. As soon as he saw me, I could see a grin, and I knew he was "Uncle Archie." I didn't greet him however, just bowed my head and stared at my crummy shoes, waiting for him to come to me. He did, and he introduced himself, and went to take me shopping for new clothing before we went back to his home in Arpinge.

Chances are, you've never heard of Arpinge. Now it's a very small town - almost a village - with a few goats and old couples scattered in its streets located close to a city called Kent. Back when I lived there, it was still small, but lively, with a schoolroom full of children, and around 150 people in all. Our house was one of the biggest in the town's, though, compared to some later homes I lived in, it was rather small. But we had enough room for two people, and our old three-legged dog, Charlie. I lived in the room upstairs, where there was a narrow bed that I slept in for a good 13 years. The ceiling leaked and the windows would never quite close so it was near-freezing in the wintertime, but I had a place for myself. My room was my haven.

As I got older, I got more and more interested in books. You see, Uncle Archie was a very well-read man, and was considered to be one of the smartest men in Arpinge and Kent. From the years 1910 to 1923 I lived with Uncle Archie, absorbing everything literary I touched. Despite my parents being long gone, I grew up a normal life, despite having an odd name like Annika and having such comparatively dark skin.

The years passed, and Uncle Archie's vigor started to ebb until one day, he simply passed away in his bed. I had never really cried, now that I think about it, until that day. More than anyone else, Uncle Archie had been a father to me, adding himself to my ever-growing list of unrelated family members.

We buried him under an oak tree where he used to love to sit and read. It didn't take long for me to decide that it was time to move out of the little town of Arpinge. It held nothing for me without him, and so I packed a few of my things, took all the money I had and that Uncle Archie had left me, and I started out towards the coast. I was going to be on a boat and in a foreign land once more with nothing but the things I brought to England, except for the new addition of Uncle Archie's switchblade.

My next destination was the United States, which was in the midst of the famed "roaring '20's" decade. By the time I hit land again, I was 21 years old.

Part Three: The States
(1926-2005)

I remember my first step onto American soil. It was a wonderful feeling, even if I wasn't an American citizen (and I'm still not, sitting here and writing this nearly 80 years later), the feeling of being in a land of freedom and pride and so many wonderful things. And it was wonderful. I still love the United States, even if my first few years were enough to make me want to leave, even if for a little while.

Like most immigrants, I landed on the East Coast, close to New York city. I ended up staying in the large city for quite some time, until I got bullied away from it. I spent my days and my nights on the streets, and did some things that haunt me even today. Some friends I made weren't the best of people, and I guess I'll leave it at that. I hate remembering NYC. That's why I moved, why I went south. I made my way down the east coast to the southern states, hitting Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia -- I spent quite some time in Atlanta --, Alabama, and ended up staying in Louisiana. Louisiana, more than Nahiya or Arpinge, became my home.

I spent only a year in Acadia, the town I decided to stay in after a long journey, before I found love. By then, I felt almost like an old maid. I was in my 20s, and had yet to settle down, or even really think of it. And already, those of us with less money could feel the Depression creeping onto us while the rich danced their lives and money away, so finding someone was even harder. That's why I was so eager when I met James. I didn't mind that we only really talked at the coffeeshop on long, lonely nights or that he refused to kiss me. I could deal with all of this, as long as I had them. I was in love, and I knew he loved me, too. He never asked me to marry him, but he did ask me to join him.

After 6 months of being close to James, he told me his secret. How he was a vampire, and that he wanted to "turn" me into one as well, to be with him for all eternity. I was young, foolish. The idea of immortality was fantastically easy to imagine, and I wanted it. Oh, how I wanted it. I didn't even hesitate when I told him yes, and he did the act that night. It was painful, sensual, sad and enlightening all at the same time. I was a vampire.

Even now, so long afterwards, the word tastes foreign on my tongue. It's such an odd word, vampire. But that's what I am, and I practically begged for this curse. In those early days, though, it was a blessing. I spent all my time in James's arms, hunting during the night and sleeping off our timeless weariness during the day. It was perfect until I found out about James's other secret.

I thought he was kidding at first, when he told me we had to run. Run? From Acadia, where we had stayed for so long? It was now the 21st century. We had been together for nearly 80 or so years, and we were still going strong. Little did I know, throughout that 80 years, he was leading a "secret life." It even strikes me as funny, now, to think of a "secret organisation of vampires," but that's what killed him. We ran and ran and ran, all night and even as much of the day as our skin could stand, but they came anyway. They came, these rogue vampires, and killed my James. And then I was all alone.

They spared me. Some nights, I still ache and wish they hadn't. Wish they had cut off my head and burnt me like they did James, but then I remember. They told me about a city, a city up north filled with vampires. Civil vampires that knew what was going on, with some creatures that were 10 times the age of myself. It was a baffling idea, to listen to these murderers (the hypocrisy makes me weep), and go to their vampire city by the name of Ravenblack, after its creator. But, what else did I have to lose? I packed up my items and scattered the ashes of James around Acadia, our home. Our life. Our everything.

And then I set out, back up north where I had been nearly 80 years ago, to the city of darkness, this Ravenblack city, crawling with creatures just like me. It was frightening. I felt like a child. I was just turning 100 years old.

Hobbies

Reading and writing: Always, always, Blade is reading, or writing something. Her flat is filled, wall-to-wall, with book shelves, scientific and literary posters, and papers, stacked one-on-top of each other messily. If anyone were to see her house, they'd think she a madman do to the sheer MESS of it all, but there's a chaotic order to it all that no one but she herself understands. Whenever she's not with friends, family, or Draconis, she's got her nose buried in a book - usually re-reading her favourite novel, Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov - or is scribbling away on pads of paper.

Tennis: From her days in Arpinge, Blade had played tennis up until the present times. She'll often go out during the night and play tennis with a wall, delighted in the rare times that she can coax a friend into playing with her. She keeps a racket in one corner of her room at all times, and takes it with her whenever she goes out for long periods of time to different places to play tennis in other lands.

Killing: Face it, she's a vampire. Killing is her job, her forte, her calling. Especially when it's against other vampires. She always keeps Holy Water and Garlic Sprays on her, and never, ever goes out without them. Armed with her weapons, she's ready for combat at any given time.

Friends and Family

Vera: Girlfriend Vera... what is there to say about Vera? It seems as if she's always been there, a kind word, a friendly hug... Even when Blade was feeling down, there was Vera. Always there... to help. It didn't take Blade long to form a crush on the beautiful woman, and for that crush to turn into something she didn't even have words for. So, when Vera accepted her request to go get coffee, Blade was surprised. This was her chance. She leaped on it, and was pleasantly surprised to find out Vera felt the same way... So here they are: happy. An odd mix, but a pleasant one, and it'll probably be that way for a long while to come. Nicknames: VeVe

Lyric: Sire Lyric is her loving sire and by far one of her best friends. Even before they bound together, Lyric had always been there for her, lending a helping hand when needed and a stern guidance when that's exactly what would help. She always knows best and Blade's respect for her is unwavering. She never plans on severing. Nicknames: Lyri

Lionsheart: Childe Lions has been there from the first day Blade set foot on Ravenblack's soil, and she couldn't be happier with the way things turned out. He's been her childe for over a year now, and she's sure more years are to come. They have a strong connection, and will probably never sever, and that's a-okay with Blade. Risika: Adopted childe Risika is the newest to Blade's close group of friends, and they didn't really get close until she started dating her sire, Draconis. But once Blade started dating him, she really hit it off with Risika and now she's her babygirl. Risi is the sweetest girl and Blade loves her very very much Nicknames: Risibebe, babygirl

Tifereth: Sibling Tif seems sometimes more like a mother than a sibling. Always worrying, always asking what's wrong. And, actually, Blade does look up to her in this kind of way, and knows she can go to Tifereth with questions on just about anything. She knows Tif loves her, and she loves her just as much. She's the best sibling she could ask for. Nicknames: Tiffy

Bambi_Boi: Best friend Bambi is Blade's best friend, along with Irk, and has been the best friend any girl could ask for. He's sweet and caring and hilarious, and loves to take naps. What more could a girl ask for? She's be lost without Bambi, and she's so glad they're so close. Nicknames: Bambi, Bam (when referring to him to others)

Irk: Best friend Irk, like Lions, is one of Blade's oldest friends in this city. She's known him since the very beginning, and they've been close since. He's always there to say something odd to cheer her up when she's down, and is just a plain good friend. Nicknames: Pepper

Andre Louvain: Ex-partner Legion has been close to Blade since he first came to the city. Good friends, moreso after they bound than anything. Even after they severed - and a rocky severing it was - Blade felt a need to stay close to her good friend. And now look at them - he's her clan leader and one of her best friends, despite not talking THAT much, and she couldn't be happier. She doesn't regret the severance anymore. She accepts it and is glad that she could be this close to her old partner, and hopes that their clan will be something great one day. Nicknames: Legion

Siring

[/i] sire just anyone. They have to show some interest in her or her line before she sires them. They must have known each other for 6 months (for those not new to the game), OR have been in one (completed) thread with her.

They must be active in Role-Playing, either on boards (RavenBlack Roleplay, The Darkest Region, The RavenBlack Bite, A Whisper in the Dark, or various family boards) or on messengers (Yahoo!, MSN, etc.).

They must have a messenger (Y!M, or MSN). She will not sire without one of these two. Connection is a must-have with her, and keeping in contact with her childe(r) is a big part of her belief system.

They must respect the family elders. An Elder is anyone with over fifteen powers, and have been in the game for over a year (this only applies to people new to the game). If your character has been here for longer than the minimum Elder status, they must respect those older than them or higher up in the line – those lower in the line or younger are allowed to be disdained, but only in private. No drama in public.

They must have a strong grasp on IC (in character) and OOC (out of character) interactions. That is, if I (Monica) tell you (as in the player) something, then your character cannot magically know it without Blade telling them first. This applies to any OOC interactions with any other player.

They must tell Blade, or me (Monica), if they plan on leaving for more than a week. If I see your character in Shadows for more than a week without prior notice, a warning will be given. If this happens again without an explanation, a second warning will be given. If it happens three times, she will sever.

I (Monica) must know about any other alternative characters you (the player) has. I promise not to cross IC and OOC – I pride myself in separating. This is just so that I can know not to do certain things in game (such as giving coins to both of your characters unknowingly and thus getting potentially deleted for cheating).

After the first week of being sired (for characters who are new to the game), I require that there be a thread showing them the basics of being a vampire – if your character has been here for longer than six months, this is not required, but if she is siring a human it is a must.

If sired, within a month, the new childe must meet all of their family – it's not a very large family, so it shouldn't be an issue. Blade will help with some, but they have to take initiative with at least one-fourth of the family, showing that they are eager to be more family-oriented and stay close.

Loyality. Loyality. Loyality. Blade will not, I repeat – will not – sire someone who she thinks will not last over six months. Siring is for life. Childer are not for Christmas. She will only sever if she is given a valid reason. Not “Oh, I'm bored with you” or “We never talk.” If there is an issue with communication, help fix it!
