The haunting music of Lestat's violin still echoed in her mind as she took his hand and stepped gingerly from the boat into the cold sand below. Shivering at the icy feeling creeping between her toes, Lyric wrinkled her nose. The sensation both pleasant and unsettling, she was silently thankful for the night out just the same. The night had begun so badly. So painfully. She was grateful to have the distraction. She was grateful to have him.
Hand in hand, Lyric and Lestat hugged the shore line as they walked, mostly in silence, with the moon leading their path. Cool, dark water lapped almost pleadingly at their bare ankles as they followed the invisible course before them. She could feel his gaze on her, but hers stayed turned to the glittering crystals of sand. It was all playing back in her mind. Every word, her tone, the choked pain in her throat as she spoke.
Lyric's thumb hovered over the 'Send' button unsteadily for what felt like years. She just couldn't bring herself to do it. She didn't want to do it. It hurt to even think about. But some where, deep inside her, a tiny voice whispered. "You have to." Squeezing her eyes tightly shut, Lyric drew in a deep breath, and willed herself onward. "You have to." Keeping her eyes tightly shut, she pressed the now darkened green button.
Voice mail. Cursing silently, she listened with anxious nervousness as the message played in her ear. Finally it ended with a hallow, emotionless beep.
Speaking in a hurried, uncertain tone, Lyric spilled her heart into the black mobile phone. Every word, every syllable, seemed to choke the life out of her. The unfeeling device curled in her hand did little to put at ease the pain she felt rushing through her. With a strangled sob, Lyric forced herself to finish her heartfelt confession, her desperate plea. Her last words still hanging in the air as she flipped the mobile gently closed.
"I'm sorry."
Before the tears had a chance to fall. Before she could fall into the sorrow encompassing her so quickly. Before she could feel the sting of her decision. Lestat's arms were around her, holding her close. Like so many times before. When things fell apart, he was always there, in the aftermath. "Shhh, none of that now, cher." He cooed in a soothing voice trying to comfort her. Lestat knew how hard it was for her to make that phone call, and without missing a beat was there to help keep her up. Gently, he curled one finger beneath her chin and with a faint smile, he nodded toward a small black case resting on the table's edge. "Come on. I have a surprise for you anyway."
"Lyric? ... Lyric?"
Lyric hadn't even noticed they had stopped until his sweet voice came trickling into her mind. Shaking her head, she pushed off the daze that had consumed her. As she realised just what she'd done, a soft flush of red came to her cheeks. Stammering, she looked away, avoiding his grey stare.
"Oh...I'm sorry, Lestat. I...I guess I got lost for a minute."
With a tender smile, he shook his head. "It's alright, cher. I'll always be here to help you find your way again." Giving her hand a soft squeeze, Lestat tugged gently at her arm. "Shall we continue?"
Regarding him silently, Lyric gave a slow nod and smiled, quickly forgetting the night's earlier pains in favour of this cherished escape. Slipping her hand from his, Lyric circled his waist with one arm and laid her head lightly against his shoulder following Lestat as he lead them further down the empty beach. In a small voice, she closed her eyes, and whispered up to him as they walked.
"Thank you."
